Physical Education

Exercise is the key not only to physical health but to piece of mind.

- Nelson Mandela

Intent

At St Columba’s, we see Physical Education (PE) as a vital and valued part of school life—where every child is celebrated as sacred and unique, created in the image and likeness of God. Because of this, we believe that developing the physical, spiritual, and emotional well-being of each child is a key part of helping them grow into the person God calls them to be.

Our aim is to inspire a love of physical activity in every child, helping them to enjoy PE while building confidence, resilience, and teamwork. We encourage children to challenge themselves, support one another, and recognise their God-given potential.

Importantly, PE at St Columba’s also teaches children how to work as a team, show kindness and respect, and compete fairly—reflecting Gospel values such as fairness, self-discipline, and compassion.

Through Physical Education, we help children recognise and celebrate the gift of their bodies, nurturing a sense of self-worth and responsibility as they grow into confident, caring, and capable individuals.

Implementation

At St Columba's we ensure that we have created a bespoke learning sequence so that the skills and knowledge the pupils develop is progressive. We work with external coaches who support the teaching and learning in PE to ensure the pupils acquire accurate knowledge. The children are taught to observe and produce the conventions of fair play, honest competition and good sporting behaviour as individual participants, team members and spectators. Thus, embedding life-long values such as co-operation, collaboration and equity of play. Participation in PE is encouraged in many forms including being an active participant as well as officiating. This enables pupils to develop their systematic thinking in tactical awareness as well as game development. Through the high-quality delivery of our Scheme of Learning in a P.E. lesson you will see: • High-Quality activities that engage all children to have success and master fundamental skills • Opportunities to work independently and collaboratively, sharing ideas, strategies and feedback • Opportunities for children to progress their learning at their own level through STEP principle • Affective use of AfL strategies including high-quality questioning to assess learning • Developing Cognitive and Social domains – going Beyond the Physical skills and attributes • Knowledge of the journey that the lesson will take the children on within future P.E. lessons

Impact

  • Our Scheme of Learning ensures that the P.E. curriculum is inclusive and progressive and allows all children the opportunity to acquire, develop and master fundamental skills, gain knowledge and understanding of key concepts and provide opportunities that will foster a life-long love and participation in Physical Activity and Sport. All children will show a higher engagement within curriculum P.E. and wider Physical Activity and School Sport.
