Year 1
Online learning - 10.01.25
School continues to remain closed today due to the adverse weather conditions surrounding our school grounds. We can not wait to welcome you all back to school when it is safe to do so. However, until then, here are some activities for you to enjoy with your families today...
Meditation:
Let's start our day by taking part in a meditation together so we feel calm and ready to learn.
English:
Please use your fantastic English skills to create a winter acrostic poem! It would be great if we could share some of these next week when you are back in school!
Phonics:
Enjoy this game of read and race that you can play with the whole family to help with your phonics skills. Remember to spot the graphemes in each word and sound out carefully just like we do in our phonics lessons. You can pick numbers out of a hat if you don't have a dice, so don't worry! Parents, please use the game below that is the same phase as your child's reading book that they bring home from school. If the book they read is phase 4, we suggest starting on phase 3. However, we always love a challenge in Year 1 so feel free to attempt phase 5!
Phase 2:
Phase 3:
Phase 5:
Maths:
See if you can solve these problems with your family. They are all linked to our most recent maths unit that we have completed.
PE:
If you are missing your PE lesson today, why not take part in a PE with Joe session!

Maths: The Mystery on Planet Zoog
Blub and Zug are aliens from planet Zoog. They have been sent on a mission to find the next-door planet, Glop and fix the broken down rover that is exploring Glop's habitat.
Disaster has struck! When they arrive at the spaceship, someone has taken Blub's spacesuit. Use the descriptions and clues below to find out who the culprit is!
Potential culprits:
English:
When we return to school we will be starting a brand new book.
Take a look at the pictures below and try to make a prediction about what our new book will be about...
Think about the setting, the plot and the characters. Share your ideas with your family and see if you can write a couple of sentences to share with your teachers about what you think.
You might want to use the sentence starters:
I predict...
I think the book is about...
Remember to try and use the conjunctions we have used in class to extend your sentences when you can!
Movement breaks:
Here are some ideas of things you can do today with your family if you need a little break from your work! Pick one and see how many times you can all do it in 60 seconds. Next time you take a break, see if you can beat your record.
Hello and welcome to Year 1. Come and take a look at the exciting things we are learning about.
Phonics
At St Columba's we follow the Little Wandle Phonics and Early Reading programme. In Year 1, phonics lessons are taught daily however we use phonics in all of our other lessons too every time that we read and write. During their time in nursery/reception your child was taught the first four phases of phonics and following a review of phases 3 and 4 during Autumn 1, we will progress on to teaching phase 5.
Please watch the video below to find out more about how phonics is taught and how best to support your child with their learning at home.
